How to Prepare a Mate

Add the yerba
Fill your mate gourd about ¾ full with yerba mate. This creates the right space for water and helps the flavor stay balanced.

Tilt and shake
Cover the top with your hand, turn it upside down, and gently shake. This mixes the leaves and keeps the taste smooth and even.

Create a slope
Tilt the gourd so the yerba forms a 45° angle inside. The higher side will be the perfect spot to place the bombilla later.

Pour water
Add a little warm (not hot) water on the lower side. Let the yerba absorb for 30 seconds so it gets moist and ready.

Insert bombilla
Place your bombilla into the damp spot and keep it still. Once it’s set, avoid moving it to maintain the flavor flow.

Add water
Pour hot water (75–80°C / 170°F) slowly near the bombilla. Sip, refill, and repeat, and enjoy your perfect mate ritual.

What is Yerba Mate and how do I drink it?
Yerba Mate is a traditional South American beverage. It’s typically served in a hollowed-out gourd, known as a "mate," and drunk through a metal straw called a "bombilla." To drink it, simply fill the gourd with yerba mate, tilt it at a slight angle, insert the bombilla, and pour hot (but not boiling) water into the bottom. Sip and enjoy!
